In 30 seconds: Base yourself in General Luna. With 3 days, do Cloud 9 and the town, an island-hopping trip, and one big day trip (Magpupungko or Sugba Lagoon). With 5 days, add the other day trip and a slow day. With 7 days, add the quiet north around Pacifico and a real do-nothing day. Check the tide table before you fix Magpupungko, keep your arrival day light, and expect rain to reshuffle at least one plan.
Planning a trip to Siargao?
Most people arrive with a list: Cloud 9, the three islands, Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko, maybe Pacifico. The list is right. The order is where trips go wrong. Boat days get cancelled by weather, rock pools only exist at low tide, and the day you land is never as productive as you planned it on the plane.
So this is less a list and more a sequence. Three versions, for three, five and seven days, written from General Luna by people who live here and watch visitors try to fit everything into too little time. Take what fits, drop the rest. The island rewards people who leave gaps in the day.
Five things that shape every Siargao itinerary
- Base in General Luna. It is where most cafés, surf schools, restaurants and tour operators are. Cloud 9 is in the same municipality, island-hopping boats leave from here, and the day trips start here. One base, no repacking.
- The tide runs Magpupungko. The rock pools in Pilar only appear as the tide falls. Look up the tide table for your dates before you decide which day it is, not after.
- Boat days depend on the weather. Island hopping and Sugba Lagoon are boat trips. Rough sea or heavy rain can cancel them, so put them early in your stay and keep a swap day. Our guide to the best time to visit Siargao explains the seasons.
- Decide how you will move. Walking, tricycles and hired drivers cover General Luna. The longer days, Sugba, Magpupungko and the north, are much easier with a scooter or a car and driver. Only ride if you are already confident on two wheels.
- Carry cash. ATMs are concentrated in General Luna and Dapa and they do run dry. Card payment is not reliable once you leave town, and the boat and environmental fees on day trips are paid on the spot.
The 3-day Siargao itinerary
Three days is enough for the essentials if you are disciplined about the sequence.
Day 1: arrive, settle, Cloud 9
Whether you fly into Sayak Airport or come by ferry through Dapa, you will reach General Luna with part of the day gone. Do not fight it. Check in, eat, then head to the Cloud 9 boardwalk in the late afternoon to watch the lineup and get your bearings. Walk the town, find the café, ATM and shop nearest your stay, and go to bed early. Our General Luna walking guide is a good first evening.
Day 2: island hopping
The classic boat day to Naked Island, Daku Island and Guyam Island leaves from General Luna, which is why it belongs on day two: you are already here, and if the weather cancels it you still have day three to try again. Go early, bring reef-safe sunscreen, water and cash, and read our island-hopping guide for how the day actually works.
Day 3: Magpupungko or Sugba Lagoon
Pick one. Magpupungko is up the east coast in Pilar and needs a falling tide. Sugba Lagoon is across the island in Del Carmen, where you register at the tourism office by the port and take a boat through the mangroves. If your low tide falls in the middle of the day, choose Magpupungko. If it falls at dawn or dusk, choose Sugba. Our two-day-trips guide covers both.
The 5-day Siargao itinerary
Five days is the sweet spot for a first visit. You get both big day trips, a surf morning, and a day that belongs to you.
- Day 1: arrive, settle, Cloud 9 boardwalk in the late afternoon, early night.
- Day 2: island hopping to Naked, Daku and Guyam.
- Day 3: Magpupungko, timed to the tide. Stop at the Maasin River on the way up the coast if the leaning palm is on your list.
- Day 4: Sugba Lagoon via Del Carmen. Add the mangrove boat ride and leave time for a swim.
- Day 5: a slow General Luna day. Surf lesson or a dawn session at Cloud 9, a long brunch, an afternoon of nothing, an early evening walk.
If the weather cancels a boat day, swap it with day five. That is the whole point of keeping one unplanned day inside a five-day trip.
The 7-day Siargao itinerary
A week changes the trip. You stop ticking boxes and start noticing which café you keep going back to. Keep the five-day core and add two days:
- The quiet north. Ride or drive up to Pacifico, the long, calmer beach in the north of the island. It is a different Siargao: fewer people, a slower pace, and a reason to leave General Luna for the day. Go with a full tank and a plan for lunch.
- A real rest day. Not a half-day, a whole one. No boat, no scooter, no alarm. Read, swim, eat, repeat. People who skip this day go home more tired than when they arrived.
If you want one more boat day and the sea is calm, some operators run longer trips to Sohoton Cove on Bucas Grande, a separate island to the south. It is a long day and very weather-dependent, so treat it as a bonus rather than a fixture. And if seven days starts to feel short, you are not alone: our guide to staying longer in Siargao is for exactly that moment.
Swaps for rain, surf and slow days
- It is raining. Boat trips may be cancelled. Move the boat day later, and use the morning for a café, a market or a slow brunch. We wrote a whole piece on what to do in Siargao when it rains.
- You came to surf. Replace day five's lesson with a surf session every morning and shift the day trips to the afternoons where the tide allows. Cloud 9 is the famous break, but surf schools can point beginners to gentler spots nearby depending on conditions.
- You are not a beach person. Keep island hopping and Sugba, swap Magpupungko for a long General Luna day of cafés, walks and conversations, and look at our events page for what is on while you are here.
- You are travelling solo. Group boat trips are the easiest way to meet people on the island. Our solo travel guide has the rest.
A sample five-day week, hour by hour
Times are deliberately loose. The island does not run on a timetable and neither should you.
- Day 1, afternoon: check in, eat, boardwalk walk at Cloud 9, early night.
- Day 2, early: boat from General Luna, three islands, back mid-afternoon, long shower, early dinner.
- Day 3, by the tide: ride up the east coast to Pilar, Magpupungko at low tide, lunch nearby, back before dark.
- Day 4, morning: cross to Del Carmen, register at the tourism office, boat to Sugba Lagoon, swim, return by road in the afternoon.
- Day 5, no alarm: dawn surf if you want it, a long brunch, an afternoon in the shade, a last walk through town.
Marajaw is on Tourism Road in Catangnan, General Luna, the same barangay as the Cloud 9 boardwalk, so most of these days start or end close to us. Check hours and directions and the full island guide before you lock in your dates.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Siargao?
Three full days covers the essentials: Cloud 9 and General Luna, an island-hopping trip, and one big day trip such as Magpupungko or Sugba Lagoon. Five days lets you do both day trips and still have a slow day. Seven days adds the quiet north and a genuine rest day, which is when the island starts to feel like a place rather than a checklist.
Is 3 days enough for Siargao?
Yes, if you base yourself in General Luna and accept that you will choose between Magpupungko and Sugba Lagoon rather than doing both. Keep the arrival day light, put island hopping on day two, and let the tide table decide the third day.
Where should I stay in Siargao for a short trip?
General Luna. It is where most cafés, surf schools, restaurants and tour operators are, Cloud 9 is in the same municipality, and island-hopping boats leave from here. For a 3- to 5-day trip, one base in General Luna saves you hours of moving around.
Do I need a scooter to follow a Siargao itinerary?
Not necessarily. Around General Luna you can walk, use tricycles or hire a driver, and island hopping is a boat trip anyway. A scooter or a hired car with driver makes the longer days, such as Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko and the north, much easier. Only ride if you are already confident on two wheels.
Should I book Siargao tours in advance?
For island hopping and Sugba Lagoon, arranging a day or two ahead through your accommodation or a local operator is usually enough outside peak holiday weeks. In the busiest season it is worth booking earlier. Magpupungko does not need a tour at all, just a tide table and a way to get to Pilar.
What is the best time of year to follow this itinerary?
The itinerary works year-round, but the dry, busier months from roughly December to April give you the most reliable boat days. The wetter months bring more rain and sometimes cancelled boat trips, so plan a swap day. Our best-time-to-visit guide goes into the seasons in detail.
